Top Ten

In order to wrap up 2011, my first full year of blogging at Room Rx, I thought I would do like many other bloggers are doing this week and share my top 10 posts from the year. These are not the most viewed or most commented on, but my personal favorites, showcasing not only what has been meaningful and important to me but a few projects I am particularly proud of.

1) Long Distance Decorating - I wrote about the delightful process of helping my sister in law (CSIL) and brother in law re-do their master bathroom. I also shared a few tips on making the most of the process here at the House of Fifty blog.

2) Timeless Kitchen Peek  - A before and after look at the dining area of a kitchen project.

3) Stylishly Casual Reveal - A fun Living Room re-do for a hip client.

4) Craft Room Mecca Reveal - From cluttered office to creative oasis, this project inspired me to get moving on my own workspace.

5) I'm back and a little wedding fun - I helped my cousin Jesse with several of the details of her May wedding including creating fabric flowers for the wedding party.

6) Color of the Moment: Coral & Turquoise - I have enjoyed writing about and creating design boards for my weekly color series, and this is one of my favorite color combos.

7) A Collected Family Room - I love showing off the work of my talented friends....

8) Fresh Fabrics Friday: Zinnia by Galbraith & Paul- So many fabrics to showcase on Fresh Fabrics Friday, this is a fave....

9) Artist Profile: Therese Winnard - My CSIL - My CSIL gets discussed a lot here on Room Rx, in this post I share a bit about who she is and her many talents.

10) Mood Board Monday: Wallpaper Edition - I credit Mood Board Monday for helping me "put myself out there" in the blog world and my collaboration with Sarah at Pewter & Sage for this MBM was a highlight.

Color of the Moment: winter white

My dream of a white Christmas did not materialize...we had a dusting of snow here in Madison and that is all. Call me crazy, but I like snow in winter! Nothing is more invigorating than pulling on warm layers, strapping on my snowshoes and heading out for a wintry hike. Today, since the only hiking I'll do will track mud into my house, I am getting my winter whites through imagery.

We have a few days until the New Year and our various resolutions and goals, but typically each of us can think of some area of our home or life that requires a bit or organizing, so today I have rounded up fresh, clean, white office and desk top accessories in order to inspire that effort.

A few of these goodies could show up in my own office as I still have a bit of work to do in there in order to wrap things up....

What plans do you have to celebrate the New Year? Ours will be pretty low key, just how we like it!

Gim's Swedish Pepparkakor

My Grandmother Gim, was the daughter of Swedish immigrants. My brother and I adored her and as her only grandchildren, who she lived halfway across the country from, she spoiled us rotten. One of my favorite treats were her Swedish spice cookies or Pepparkakor.  Traditionally these cookies were served during the holidays and cut in classic shapes, but Gim knew how much we loved them and would make them when-ever we visited, cutting them into hearts at Valentines Day, hens and chicks at Easter or just the traditional 8 petaled flower.

The cookie is thin and crispy and was a labor of love for Gim, especially as she got older and her hands were riddled with arthritis. They must be rolled quite thin and at first the dough is very stiff. What I love about Pepparkakor is that they are simple, not decorated, not an overtly sweet nor heavy cookie, perfect for a quick sweet with a cup of coffee or glass of milk. The tradition of baking the Pepparkakor each Christmas is now carried on by me and I know my kids enjoy the cookies as much as I do. The other night as I was making them, even though there were projects to be finished and tests to study for, the kids were hanging out in the kitchen helping me roll and cut and sneaking bits of dough...

If you have shopped at Ikea, no doubt you have seen and maybe even purchased a tin of Pepperkakor cookies, but to me these don't hold a candle to Gim's tasty, homemade version, so today I am sharing her recipe with you.

(Dancing across the linen runner are little jultomte  or Swedish "elves" associated with Christmas.)

Here is her recipe, in her words, lovingly shared with me forever ago, by my Mom:

Gim's Swedish Pepparkakor
Ingredients:
1/2 C unsalted butter
1/2 C light brown sugar
1/2 C dark Karo syrup
1 egg yolk
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp ground allspice
1 tsp cinnamon

Boil sugar, syrup, butter and spices. Let cool - beat in egg yolk and 1/2 tsp baking soda dissolved in 1 tbsp warm water.  Add enough flour to make stiff for rolling (2 1/4 - 2 1/2 C)
Roll out VERY thin and cut with Christmas cutters.
Line baking sheets with foil and bake on 3rd shelf at
350 degrees - 5 minutes or so, until golden.
Watch carefully.

I hope you'll give these special cookies a try and that you enjoy them as much as I do. Do let me know.  Gim's recipe for Swedish meatballs is a keeper too, I shared it here last year.

Just for fun, I thought I would share a picture from years back of Gim and I....
She was a special and talented lady who taught me many things, but those are stories for another time.

I am signing off for a few days to enjoy the fruits of my labors and the festivities of the season with both family and friends.  I wish all of you a wonderful holiday. Thanks for stopping by Room Rx and sharing your time with me, it is a wonderful gift!

God Jul!
(Swedish for Merry Christmas)

A handmade gift: fabric baskets

Sometime ago I found this fabulous tutorial for making fabric baskets so I decided to try my hand at it. If you have been reading Room Rx for a while you know I am self diagnosed with  "DIY-ADD," but this little project looked to be about my speed, only a few materials needed, fairly simple directions and something that seemingly could be finished in one sitting (I get antsy if it takes more than that). Armed with some adorable fabrics, I decided to make the baskets as a baby shower gift for my cousin Jesse (they will look amazing in her sweet baby girl's nursery).

Yes, I was pretty pleased with the results, so much so that I thought, "why stop there?" Jesse and I had discussed creating a gallery wall in the nursery using artwork and fabrics.  The left over fabrics framed in embroidery hoops are perfect and since Jesse is a girl who, like me adores doilies, I added a couple I picked up at a thrift store....

This baby gift was totally "me" and I am delighted to say, very much appreciated by my cousin.
I can't wait to see them in "sweet baby girl's" finished room.

With more cousin's babies on the way, I think I'll be making a few more of these fabrics baskets (but not until after the holidays!!!) I may even make a few for my office....

Have you ever created a handmade gift for an important occasion? I would love to hear your stories and see the fruits of your labor!

I am plugging away at my to do list, ever so slowy getting things checked off. Yesterday I thought I was finished wrapping gifts and then Fed Ex made a delivery.... Add to that the fact that my youngest just gave me his wish list... 'Tis the season!

I am linking this little project up to Suzy's party...
