Fresh Fabrics Friday: Collegiate Prints

Shortly after I started blogging on Room Rx I created a Cathy Wall Designs facebook page. Like supportive family members do, my kids, nieces, nephews and others "liked" my CWD page and now get my regular posts in their news feed. I'm sure they mostly ignore what is going on over at Room Rx, clicking instead on stories and photos from from friends, and more "interesting" posts.

Apparently my nephew Charlie is paying attention (at least to my headlines) as it has become a bit of a joke between us when he asks me what is on "Fresh Fabric Friday" this week or can name a feature from a week or two back.  So this week "Fresh Fabrics Friday" is dedicated to him and fabrics he might actually use! Charlie attends Michigan State University, as did his Dad, his Mom and uncle are University of Illinois grads and I graduated from Iowa State so  I was able to find fabrics to represent all of those schools.  And of course since Charlies loves a little rivalry, and we live in Madison, I threw in  some University of Wisconsin prints.

So what does one do with these fabrics?  I figured the creative people over on Etsy would have tons of ideas and I was not disappointed. Check out my finds....

Two alma maters in one household? No worries, this cute teddy solves that. Wouldn't this be perfect decked out in the green and white of State and the blue & orange of U of I?

Someday Charlie, you'll have kids, maybe your Mom will make you one of these in those great State fabrics....

Or maybe a quilt....

Love this "dog scarf!" Probably need to get a dog first though... do college guys have dogs?!

There is always a pillow for your sofa. You do have a sofa in your apartment...???

Now here is a project even you college boys can do, I linked up the tutorial below, so don't be afraid to give it a try! What co-ed wouldn't be impressed with the craftiness of a guy who can make one of these?

So there you go Charlie!!!  Let me know what else you would like to see here on "Fresh Fabrics Friday," I'm sure I can oblige.

For the rest of my readers, if you are not already a follower of Room Rx on facebook,
I would love it if you click over and "like" me there!

Gotta run....I have a little project I am working on for my own home and you know me and my DIY-ADD, if I don't get after it, it won't be done until November (and that would be a little post peak for this project to say the least).  Stay tuned, I'll be sharing it with you all very soon!

Enjoy your week-end my friends!

Guess who's here?!

Yes this beautiful baby girl has arrived on the scene!
Meet Sally Jean, named in honor of her paternal great grandmother and her maternal grandmother, and melting the hearts of all who meet her and those who can't wait to meet her (including a few aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents and this second cousin)!

The talented Kelly Gorney shot these lovely newborn photos and captured the sweetness of this new baby (more photos on Kelly's blog). Imagine how delighted I was to see little Miss S. posing in her nursery.
So happy for Jesse and GW and their special family!

Color of the Moment: mossy green

The other day I received a surprise in my inbox, photos that my "blog friend" (see definition at the end of post) Pam from Simple Details took. She was enjoying a hike near her home in Denver and came across a couple of scenes where she was inspired by the colors and thought of my regular "Color of the Moment" feature! I am not sure that she knew that green is my favorite color, nor did she anticipate that I would actually do a post using her shot, but seeing the mossy green attached to this rock, I too was inspired.

The look pulled together in the room below makes subtle use of green despite the paint on the wall and the bold fabric choice on the wing chairs. The rustic beams and stained wood door keep the room casual, the perfect place to enjoy conversation and the warmth of a fire (and maybe a glass of wine!).

blog friend: noun /'frend/ A person, met through the act of writing a "web log" or blog, an on-line journal, with whom an attachment involving affection and esteem is formed. This happens exclusively in writing, through leaving thoughtful blog comments and engaging in email conversations. Amazing connections are made and kind acts follow suit.

Have you marveled at the relationships formed through blogging?  Who knew?!

P.S. Pam is one talented lady with quite an eye for anything design related and a list of DIY projects that will knock your socks off, so if you have never visited Simple Details, today is the day, go have a look. You will thank me for sending you there.....!

A Hip & Comfy Family Room: Progress on the built ins

Last week I showed you my sketch for this wall of built ins in a client's home.  I am just delighted with how things are shaping up and thought you would enjoy seeing the progress. The mantle design has changed a bit from the original concept (it's always good to be flexible... and patient, as projects unfold),  we decided to go with a raised panel door style to keep the look of things consistent with the rest of the home.

On the left, by the TV, see how the bi-fold pocket doors just disappear into the cabinet?

Look at how great those doors look when the TV is closed away....

Tons of space for books and accessories.... the back will remain creamy white... I know, bucking the trend!

Here we are with the mantle installed, the crown moulding finished and one coat of paint....
still deciding on sconces.

The hardware will be added this week, keeping it simple with a classic oil rubbed bronze knob similar to this....

Next up? The fun stuff... filling up those open bookcases, can't wait!
How about you, what progress has been made on projects you have been working on?

The weather here in Madison continues to be more like May or June than March. Magnolias and other blossoming trees are in flower, the daffodils are in peak and stunning, tulips and other Spring bulbs are sprouting and so are the dandelions.  We did a bit of work in our yard over the week-end and I must say, I am feeling it today.... out of practice I guess!!!
