More often than not my DR is the location of a project spread out across the table, on the side board and even on the floor. I sew here, craft here and occasionally entertain here. That said, my style is pretty low key, a mix of a few old pieces, some newer items and a few bargains. This is what the room looked like when we bought our home:
We added hardwood floors, took out the chair rail, changed the light fixture and painted all of the trim and crown moulding. Here is how things look today...
The table is one of the first furniture purchases I ever made. A harvest table fashioned from recycled barn pine, it was once our "all the time" table and has seen quite the wear and tear over the years. That history and resulting patina is what I love about it.
I also love the chairs, the result of much searching, a mix of high and low. The black x back chairs came from now defunct custom furniture maker, Robert Bergelin Company in North Carolina and the red chairs host chairs are Pier One bargains ($50 each, yes sir)!
I have blogged about my window treatments previously, but they are tricked out Peyton Drapes from Pottery Barn. The upholstery jute was a bargain at 50 cents a yard and works perfectly in this room.
The wall hanging is a piece of Osborne & Little fabric that I found at a flea market for $15. It is a hand painted linen that retails for over $150 per yard! The demi-john belonged to my parents and graced my childhood home.
Keeping it real, this is how my dining room looks on almost a daily basis....
But I can get her "prettied up" for company, like this for Thanksgiving dinner last year.....
And yes I am a fan of red, I have lots of it sprinkled through out my home and while it may not be an au courant "color of the moment" it works for me!
Head over to Rene's blog, Cottage & Vine and check out all of the lovely dining rooms, it is so much fun to have a look at other people's homes and how they decorate!
Does your room need a “prescription” for a change of decor, function or design? If so please contact me, I would love to help your room feel better with a Room Rx
Ha! The keeping it real part looks like my dining table. Etsy stuff & a sewing machine is there much of the time. Thanks for joining the "room by room" series Cathy!

I love your dining room! It's so warm and inviting. I miss spending time with you over a nice cup of coffee at that table. I'd even clear out a little spot amid the chaos to chat with you while you sewed or worked on some craft. Don't ask me to help, though, unless you don't care how it turns out.
ReplyDeleteCathy, this is just wonderful! You did an amazing job on those curtains! Then finding that pricey fabric and using it as a wall hanging....it looks perfect! The buffet looks a lot like one we had in our house when I was a kid too! Thanks for sharing and the keeping it real pic is great!
ReplyDeleteI love it! I especially the art above the buffet .... gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful Cathy - a true reflection of you (and your family but probably mostly you). I love that you mix and match the seating and I really love the fabric that you got at a bargain (!!) that is a great statement piece. I'm also sharing my Plan B over at Rene's blog - see you there!
ReplyDeletei love those two chests used as a sidebaord! the red and black finish is awesome!
ReplyDeleteI am so in love with your dining room. It looks like such a cozy and relaxing space to enjoy a good meal with family and friends - or to whip up a good craft project :)
ReplyDeleteNow I need to go check out your post on the drapes...
It's a beautiful room (great transformation). You have a natural talent for decorating. So pretty!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see that my dining table isn't the only one usually covered in sewing, paper, and other bits and pieces! You did an amazing transformation in your room. The wall hanging is gorgeous...what a find!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful fabric, it makes such a unique piece of art! My dining room looked just the same, I cleaned it today! I should say relocated the clutter out of sight! :)
ReplyDeleteIt does not even seem like the same room!!! [the before]. Love the fabric wall hanging...one of my favorite prints from O&L. I am in love with your windows....and for me....my DR table is where I fold my laundry :)
ReplyDeleteCathy, I love the mix in your dining room. One of the first things that caught my eye is that fabric on the wall - love it! The demijohn, the light fixture, the chairs..gorgeous. A very welcoming dining space.
