Room Rx: Kitchen Tweaking

A while back I gave you a little peek at the dinette in the kitchen I am working on a "tweak" for.  My client is tired of the natural Maple cabinets and how they almost match the floor in her "builder spec" kitchen and she felt that the layout missed the boat in best using the square footage.  So she set about gathering her inspirations and doing her homework. She has a great eye and is very design savvy but like with the living room in her home, she needed some help in pulling it all together.

So here we are before... a kitchen with great bones, just needing a dose of style and some "tweaking."

A nice large pantry for storage, but what to do with the wall area?

The view to the dining and living rooms

 and to the family room.

Gorgeous arch top window, 11 foot ceiling in the kitchen, 9 foot in the dinette and family room.

So what is the plan you ask? Here we go....
1) add a peninsula between the existing dinette and kitchen (perpendicular to the cabinet pictured directly above)
2) change out a couple of cabinet doors to glass doors
3) add some interesting furniture details
4) paint the cabinets a creamy white
5) add a subway tile back splash
6) change out the cabinet hardware
7) change the ceiling fan on the tall kitchen ceiling to a statement light
8) accessorize to add a pop of color and better relate to the other first floor spaces
9) new table, chairs and rug in the dinette
10) Change family room furniture layout and make other minor changes to better tie the spaces together

Here is my design concept board for this room....

kitchen tweaking

The project is well underway, the products are on order or in home, the carpenter, tile pro and electrician are lined up and hopefully this kitchen will be transformed before Christmas! Changes such as these are budget worthy, green and often quite wise as they can have great impact without the fuss of a full renovation.

Have you ever "tweaked" a room such as a kitchen or bath in your home?  If so did the end result accomplish all that you hoped for?

Does your room need a “prescription” for a change of decor, function or design? If so please contact me, I would love to help your room feel better with a Room Rx

  2. This home has such a beautiful classic look to it - I love that. And I love that you're keeping that classic look going but giving it a little boost with some color and an update to those cabinets. It is a grand plan but it sounds like you're ready to bust it out. Can't wait to see progress.

  4. Great ideas, Cathy. I like the light fixture for the kitchen and the infusion of all the color and pattern. Should be a terrific end product.
