Design Inspiration: Boxcar Graffiti

Yesterday I shared the work of my talented photographer friend Carolee Euritt Salat.  Not one to let a design opportunity pass me by, and because I LOVE these photographs, I wanted to share how I would incorporate a few into a room design.  Based on the abstract nature of these photos, I envisioned them gracing the large walls of a loft living space, but truly, I believe they would work in a home of any style.

This loft dining space would get it's feel from the raw, bold nature of the graffiti and would include a buffet in reclaimed teak, slick urban chairs, a black table, industrial lighting and pops of the color found in the photos.  I picture it all anchored on neutral walls with a bold rug under foot.

Next, I would have larger prints made and then frame them in simple black frames, perhaps even matted, depending on the size of the room and wall.  I would do a grouping of 3 for impact, 1 large and the 2 similar ones a bit smaller and arrange them something like this over the buffet:

Simple, graphic patterns in the rug and fabric for the bench cushion echo the look and color in the photographs. The yellow chairs could be placed at either end of the buffet when not in use, and lamps could be substituted on the buffet if wall sconces were not in order.  So there you have it,  a clean modern loft dining room.

I think it is important to note here that you should purchase art that you love, which will always work in your home and you will never tire of it because you love it.  I chose to use the art here as the inspiration and starting point for the room's decor and color.  Beautiful photos or art can just as easily be the finishing touch or even a ever changing gallery of sorts.
