Shade Sails

While we were in Boston on our family vacation in July, I came across an inventive solution to creating shade for an outdoor seating area. Given that a couple of my clients have outdoor spaces that are quite sunny and lacking for shade, I was intrigued.

We saw this in Cambridge on the Harvard campus...

A quick Google search and look what I found....

I love the organic look and feel of these shades as well as the potential for using them in creative combinations.
How difficult would it be to do this? Well you can buy ready made sails here

And here.

Or if you are clever and creative like Jessica from Running with Scissors, you can make your own with her great tutorial for a DIY shade sail project.

Shade sails seem such a great way to make a cozy, shady spot in any yard, don't you think?

Does your room need a “prescription” for a change of decor, function or design? If so please contact me, I would love to help your room feel better with a Room Rx.

I have seen these - such a simple and effect solution and aesthetically pleasing, too, I think. I love the one with the string of lights - stunning in the evening, I am sure! Glad to see you are back blogging, Cathy. Hope you had a perfect summer.

What a great option for a more modern look. The diy looks great with the lighting, too!

I love, love, love these. It's almost like a fort for grown-ups, isn't it?
One cautionary tale though - I suggested that my Mom get one for their back deck to give it some shade. She had a blue and red pattern on her outdoor furniture and decided to get a blue shade sail. Installed, it looked like she hung up one of those tarps you get at the hardware store. My poor Mom was so bummed out! I recommend going for white or a neutral!!!

So cool and different - and quite the conversation starter too. I've seen bags made out of recycled sails. I met the woman who made them at the arts fest we went to in June. They were really cool.

These are great! I've seen them at events, but never in a home situation. I think it's such a creative and interesting solution to a no-shaded area!

Very clever. Our backyard is lacking shade and this might be a great solution. Thanks for the inspiration.
