Mud hall is the perfect term for the space in my CSIL's new home that connects the garage to the rest of the home. Originally intended as a three season porch, my CSIL and her husband had other plans for it.
The room needed to function not only as an entry and mudroom, but as an office since my brother in law works from home. The first step in the process was to figure out how to fit all of that into the not so large space.
A few measurements and a sketch later and we had a plan. Panelling would
come down, new, energy efficient windows would be installed, a door to
the garage added, the door into the house removed and the opening
widened and most importantly, heating and cooling added to the
previously unheated space.
Then the fun stuff, like a bold rug to bring in a pop of color....
A trip to Ikea netted a few organizing pieces and a stool for the "command center" and voila, the mud hall is now looking good and fully functioning.
I just love working with my CSIL, we collaborate so well. From the initial brainstorming, to the issues that come up during execution and the final details, we build off of each other's thoughts and ideas. The best part? She totally gets my creative mind and her final product is always spot on!
Do you have a friend, client or "partner in decorating crime?"
Does your room need a “prescription” for a change of decor, function or design? If so please contact me, I would love to help your room feel better with a Room Rx.

What an amazingly creative use of space, you two are quite the team! I posted about my partner in crime today, too! :)
GREAT work you two! I love the rug - that is really fun and the perfect pop. And can you share the paint color used? It's very pretty in there. It looks like there might be some work going on in the kitchen too - can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve next. It's fun to collaborate with someone that understands and knows your vision - make it so much fun.
What a cool space -- such a great example of taking a space that you wouldn't really use that much and turning it into something super functional. And, that rug is amazing :)
Looks great! You two work well together. It is so nice to have a well functioning space!
What an awesome multi-functional space. Love those built-ins. The rug is the perfect pop of color. Job well done!
I love how clean an organized this space is. That desk area looks like it will get endless use. Great rug, too.
Brilliant ideas!
