Room Rx: A Sweet Girl's Nursery - Reveal!

Drum roll please! "A Sweet Girl's Nursery" is finally pulled together, just in time as this wee little one should be arriving on the scene in the next couple of weeks! For my cousin Jesse, this was a labor of love, no detail to small to be considered, no project insurmountable, all done on a small budget. Jesse wisely chose to use a few pieces that she and her husband already owned (the rug, leather chair and ottoman, lamp and side table) which helped keep costs down. Added bonus? The rug created the beautiful and classic inspiration for the room.

Jesse and I had a ball working on the nursery together, all long distance, via phone, e-mail, facebook, i-chatting and texting, all without me ever setting foot in the space.Jesse is a lot like my CSIL in that if I give her and idea or direction, she runs with it.

And now.... another drum roll, here it is...!

The vintage prints were a find the Jesse had picked up early on, not sure how they would work in the room, but inspired by the scenes depicted and the colors.

How about the lovely, girly chandy?
And the perfect lamp, which belonged to our Grandma...

The gallery wall is so sweet, filled with embroidery hoops framing fabrics and vintage doilies, crocheted booties and bib, even a yarn wrapped letter, complete with a fabric flower from Jesse's wedding.

And just because a good reveal always gains perspective when you can see where the space began, here we are...before!

And my Design Concept Board, tweaked a few times to reflect a change of direction or two along the way.

And the lovely Mama to be....
proudly posing in her baby girl's room!

Many thanks to photographer extraordinaire,  Kelly Gorney for photographing the room and allowing me to use the photos here. Kelly has a beautiful blog where she shares photos from her shoots, check it out, the girl's got crazy talent! I'm guessing that this "Sweet Little Miss" will be appearing there after her newborn session....

If you missed anything about "A Sweet Girl's Nursery" along the way and want to know more about it and the projects done,  you can get caught up by starting here.
Move on to post #2.
Read about the DIY dresser/changing table.
And then the DIY Roman Shades,
and finally the DIY Crib Skirt.

As with any room, I am sure that things will evolve in this nursery once the special occupant arrives. One change already in the works is a built-in bookcase and radiator cover being built by a friend to go between the windows. I'll be sure to share once that is installed.
Thanks for following along in this Room Rx process, I am so proud of Jesse and how she was able to fulfill the vision for this nursery, great work girl!

A Sweet Girl's Nursery: DIY project #3

Today I have another DIY project to share from "A Sweet Girl's Nursery" before we get to the big reveal. Soon it will be time for this little pumpkin to arrive on the scene and her Mama has been hard at work getting things ready.... If you have been following along, you know that Jesse gave a tired old dresser a facelift and created "custom" Roman shades using ready made shades and fabric, so she was more than ready to tackle making a crib skirt.

Initially Jesse wanted a gathered skirt for this beautiful Jenny Lind crib, but after researching how to do it, she felt that the effort required for a novice seamstress would not result in a look she was going to be happy with. A change of plans, a little ingenuity and a bit of hard work later and here is the gorgeous pleated crib skirt....

I do believe that "Mama Jesse" is going to get a new name, "The Queen of Stitch Witchery!" Can you believe that she made this amazing crib skirt  without sewing more than a couple of seams? Jesse did a rough sketch, measured and re-measured to determine the size of the pleats, stitched the fabric together to achieve the length necessary and then worked her "Stitch Witchery" magic, hemming and pleating.

The pleats are made permanent with a seam along the top and then more Stitch Witchery to affix the velcro on top of that.

The rest of the velcro was attached to the crib using a hot glue gun, and then the skirt was put in place.

Voila!  The crib skirt turned out beautifully, rich, full and sophisticated. I like the look better than the gathered skirt... Jesse knocked it out of the park!

I can't wait to share the full Room Rx reveal next week. Jesse and I had so much fun working together on this room and the result is charming and full of love!

A Sweet Girl's Nursery - DIY project #2

My cousin Jesse, is one clever gal! Today I just have to show you how she cost effectively created "custom" window treatments for her baby girl's room. But before I do, a sneak peek at it all..... thanks to Jesse's lovely friend and talented photographer Kelly Gorney....

How sweet is that photo? Jesse is glowing and I might add that the room looks pretty good too....! Jesse was motivated to finish pulling the nursery together for her photo shoot with Kelly, not to mention the baby's impending arrival, so she was working her "fingers to the bone" on several DIY projects. Remember the chest she painted? Today, thanks to Jesse, I can share how she pulled off the "custom" shades.

Jesse began this project with a pair of ready made, cotton duck Roman shades purchased from JC Penney (on sale!) to fit, inside mounted in the windows. The shades were similar to these:

Next she measured and cut her fabric to not only cover the shade, but to be perfectly positioned on it (the shades mirror images of each other) and allow for seams and coverage over the support dowels.

Using a combination of Stitch Witchery and hot glue, Jesse carefully created finished edges and glued the "custom" fabric in place over the shade, beginning with the entire perimeter and finishing with the support dowels. This was the time consuming part, ensuring that the stripes were perfectly vertical, the edges lined up and the fabric did not buckle.

She finished the shades by repeating the process with the valances that velcro to the top covering the hardware. This required additional patience and fabric matching (and a failed attempt on one as the stripes did not line up).

The final product.....

Didn't they turn out beautifully?

Nothing is more rewarding for me than when I can help inspire someone to confidently complete a decorating project. Motivated by a limited budget and a desire to have a unique nursery, Jesse has made this happen by taking on projects such as this. I'll be sharing at least one more DIY project and the full reveal in the next week, so be sure to come back and check it out!

A Sweet Girl's Nursery: DIY project #1

On Monday I gave you a little "look see" of this diamond in the rough...

Let's satisfy your curiosity by sharing the transformation shall we? ......Are you ready...? Here she is...

Remember the inspiration fabric?

Jesse is a pretty talented girl, so with a little encouragement from me, look at how she interpreted the pattern on the drawer fronts....

Didn't she do an amazing job?

Yes those are the fabric baskets that I made for this "Sweet Baby Girl!" And before I go....how cute are these?!

Along with the adorable Mary Jane's, do you suppose "they" crochet mini Converse sneakers for boys?!!!

Hope you are having a great week. My son and I managed to shop for the remaining items needed for his semester away without "incident," (you parents of teenagers know what I am talking about), he is knocking off  the things on his "to do" list and so am I. T- minus 3 days until Saturday's send off.... now, if only he would pack!

Room Rx: A Sweet Girl's Nursery - progress

Time for an up date! This sweet girl's nursery  for my cousin Jesse's baby is moving along. I have so much to share, but I am afraid I have been withholding from you, so let me get you up to speed...

This is a nursery done on a budget, purchasing only what is needed and using many items already owned. Here is where the room started... freshly painted floors (carpet torn up revealing hardwood in not the best condition, so painting was the perfect solution).

The inspiration for the room, a rug from another room:

We found this fabric, which matches perfectly...

BTW, this is what it looks like on the computer screen..... just sayin'!  As I mentioned on FFF, you can't always be sure of the color accuracy on screen so it's usually best to select fabrics in person.....

and this fabric for a touch of whimsy...

Instead of purchasing a new chair, this comfy number will reside in the nursery...

Our Grandma's lamp is joining the party, the blue is a perfect match to the rug....

So how will it all come together you ask?
A sweet girl's nursery

This will be a girly girl's room, sweet, lacy and lovely. The pink on the walls is just a whisper of color, same with the blue on the ceiling. A friend is building a bookcase between the windows which will also serve as a radiator cover. A collection of milk glass will grace it's shelves, nestled among books and toys.
Jesse is working diligently on a ton of DIY projects so stay tuned as I'll be sharing those. Wait until you see what she has done to transform this piece......

I hope you will bear with me this week, my posting will be a bit light as I am trying to focus on my "to do" list which includes all of the last minute stuff for sending my oldest off to his semester at Conserve School. I can't believe he leaves this Saturday....!
