Room Rx: Stylishly Casual

A couple of weeks ago, in this post, I shared the living room of a friend in need of a
Room Rx.  Inspired by this ikat settee and this natural fiber rug, and somewhat bound by the existing piano and it's location on the only inside wall large enough to house it, I pulled together a couple of furniture plans and design concept boards. In the mail I sent a Room Rx package which included all of these and in addition, some fabric samples for reupholstering a garage sale chair and making pillows. A few e-mail and phone conversations later, we had agreed to a floor plan and fine tuned the look of the room to the direction depicted below:

High Street Market: Hello, Fiddle Leaf Fig!

The room is on the small side with tall ceilings and window or door openings on all but one wall.  The scale of the furniture  was important so that we could optimize the seating.  (If I knew how to share a scanned image I would post the furniture plan, but I seem to be a somewhat technologically challenged blogger and unable, at least for the moment, to do that.) Ultimately, the seating is angled in the room and we are using either a secretary or chest of drawers on the large wall opposite the piano.  The fabrics selected play up the yellows in the sofa,  add a more geometric element to the organic nature of the ikat and mix scale.  Here is a better look at the fabrics from Robert Allen:

Additional pops of yellow and a bit of black (every room should have a little black) as well as some more rustic touches add interest and movement.  A large lantern hung from the ceiling will add light and visually bring the ceiling down.  The room is well underway, with lots of "virtual" tweaking (photos flying over e-mail) and experimenting as we go, I love how it is coming together and can't wait to share the finished look!

Does your room need a “prescription” for a change of decor, function or design? If so please contact me,
I would love to help!
