Color of the Moment: radiant orchid

A new year and a new color!
There has been lots of conversation about Pantone's color for 2014 and not all of it good. Many find the color a bit over the top, but it is important to remember that this color was chosen for purposes other than just home decor. Check out Pantone's Radiant Orchid Pinterest board and see what I mean.

While I don't gravitate towards this color, I find it interesting and unusual. When I heard this piece on NPR I thought, "I am going to embrace this!" Putting it in perspective, it is a trend and I for one gravitate towards trends, but only in a small way. So with that in mind I thought I would share how I would create a room design using radiant orchid.

I began with a stunning painting by Elaine Gleason.
It had just enough of the "radiant orchid" color to satisfy my need to jump on the bandwagon. I then paired it with large pieces in olive and khaki which provided a more functional, changeable background. Add some sophisticated accent pieces with lots of texture, an inexpensive rug and some throw pillows and fabric and voila, a space on trend without being trendy!

So…. what do you think?
Can you see radiant orchid working it's way into your home?

I hope your holiday season was wonderful yet relaxing and that you, like me, are ready to dig into the new year and all that it has to offer.
We are starting with a bang here in Madison, sub zero temps (-12 is the high), wind chills (- 40)  and no school today and maybe even tomorrow….
And I was so ready to get back into my routine!
Who says the week can't begin on Wednesday?

I like how you only used touches of it here, I think a whole room is a bit overwhelming of that color! Nice job!!

Of course you made it look fabulous!! I love it paired with orange in that tribal print pillow, I could get on board with some pretty new accessories. This cold blast needs to come to an end, all we've done is stay inside and cook and eat!!

Hi Cathy, I was thinking of you yesterday when the weatherman was showing your region on the map. That is the true definition of hibernation. I was so against this color, until I saw your version of it. I could live in that space.

Oh Cathy, I can't even imagine those temperatures. Love the image board you created - so pretty with just the right touch of radiant orchid!

I could totally live in this room. That artwork is gorgeous and the rug is just perfect. Looks like my week is gong to get started on Wednesday too. Dreaming of the beach right now!

I want to read that NPR piece. Putting on my to-do list for tonight. It's a tough color but I think can work in a variety of settings. I love that painting that you've chosen and the accent pillows.

Wow! What a surprise - in 2011-2012 we re-upholseterd our furniture for our new-to-us Old House and used this kind of color scheme! Love seats in a Kravet green "grass" velvet E27224.
2 side chairs in Osborne & Little Pullman F5270-08 with the "pink-purple" and then some cushions for the sofa in Canoga Fig From Robert Allen! Wish I could attach pix :) Our updated furniture looks great in this livingroom which has fab millwork in old grain oak that has never been painted, bur rather lovingly taken care of over the 100 plus years since it was built. So interesting to see your Board. Thanks.
