Out and About Madison: The Mansion Hill Inn

Every town has it's little gems and Madison, Wisconsin is no different.  The other day I had the pleasure of touring The Mansion Hill Inn, a small, luxury hotel.  Originally built as a private residence in 1857 by Alexander McDonnell, builder of  Madison's 2nd capitol building, the inn sits on a ridge over looking Lake Mendota and keeps company with 3 other gorgeous, historic buildings at the same intersection. At the turn of the century the building became home to a boarding house, which later became apartments and finally in 1983, transformed into a small luxury hotel. The building recently underwent an extensive renovation, but the stunning exterior has remained pretty much as originally built.

A four story oval shaped staircase leading to a light filled belvedere brings guests to the 10 beautifully decorated rooms.

Each guest room is unique and has been meticulously appointed.  Seeing most of them in person, I was struck by the understated elegance and attention to detail.  From soothing colors to gorgeous fabrics and linens to Kohler spa bathrooms, every room would make for a lovely stay. Below are a few shots of my favorites, but you can check out each individual room here.

Mansion Hill welcomes it's guests with a gracious, yet comfortable Victorian style parlor and bar area.  The facility is perfect for hosting a party or even a small wedding (a charming outdoor garden is just perfect for that).  A personalized concierge service will help arrange for everything from dinner reservations to tickets to the theater or other local events, many of which are with-in walking distance.  In all, Mansion Hill Inn is the perfect getaway and I'm sold!  I am looking into an overnight stay to celebrate our {big} wedding anniversary this fall.  Wish me luck in getting the perfect room!

Does your room need a “prescription” for a change of decor, function or design? If so please contact me,
I would love to help!

Thanks so much for this, Cathy! When I visit my mom in Madison, it's usually with kids in tow, so it's the Marriott or similar for us. I could definitely enjoy a visit on my own or with my husband and staying at Mansion Hill. Looks gorgeous.

I found your blog through a comment you made on another blog. I'm a fellow MidWestern gal. My husband and I stayed at the Mansion Inn a few years ago before they renovated. I've seen it since, and even though the rooms are lovely now, they were even better before. The hotel had more saturated colors then, like plums, grays, and soft teals. It still looks great, just not the same as I remember -- it had a very designer feel before. The area is lovely! Hope you enjoy your stay.
